While we think that our permanent teeth will be with us forever, there are a variety of reasons that people need to have one, several, or even all of their permanent teeth replaced. Fortunately, with advances in dental science, patients now have a wide variety of options when considering a replacement. While dentures have been one of the most common tooth replacement devices, dental implants are the best choice for most patients who need to replace their teeth.
Dental implants are surgically implanted “teeth” that look and feel just like your natural teeth. A small titanium post is inserted into the bone underneath your gums and allowed to naturally heal. The crown or portion of the implant that looks like a tooth is then attached to the top of that post. You are left with a piece of dental work that is completely disguised. When you smile, eat, or speak, other people won’t even know that not all of your teeth are natural; over time, you may forget too!
If you need to have a tooth replaced, you will come into the office where Gentle Dental Spa will review your dental and medical histories, then complete an exam of your teeth and the underlying bones. Once this has been completed, Gentle Dental Spa will create a detailed map of your teeth and ensure that the measurements are accurate.
The titanium post, which looks something like a screw, is then inserted into the bone and the gums are allowed to heal over the post. There is a small portion of that post that sticks above the gum line. You will be temporarily fitted with a crown while your permanent crown is created. Once the post and gums have properly healed, you will come back to our offices and have the permanent crown installed.
After the completion of this process, you can continue to do all of the things that you love without having to worry about your teeth or dentures.
Dentists don’t just like implants because they look so much like natural teeth that people typically can’t tell you to have one. One of the major benefits of implants is how they react with your natural teeth and bone structure. Titanium is used because your body doesn’t have a negative response to this metal. That means that you won’t have to worry about the chances of rejecting an implant, or your body trying to fight it off like an infection.
In addition, the titanium is treated with a special coating that allows your body to recognize the material as part of itself. Once the implant is placed, your body actually starts to grow new, strong bone around the implant to securely hold it in place.
In contrast, when you use dentures, your body recognizes that you no longer need the bone that held your teeth in place, and it begins the process of resorbing the bone. This means that your body absorbs the bone because it is no longer being used. Over time, this can lead to a weaker jaw, shifting of other teeth, tooth loss, or even a change to your facial appearance.
Another benefit of implants is just how simple they are to maintain. You don’t need to use any adhesives or special cleansers like dentures require. Your implant is always in your mouth, and you brush and floss, just like your natural teeth.
